When we think of the touch used in massage, which is front-loaded with nurturing intention and experience, we usually think of it as affecting primarily the physical body. When someone asks about benefits, the most obvious responses and the easiest to give are that massage increases circulation; it enhances flexibility and improves metabolic efficiency. At this level of understanding of massage; the pushing and pulling of skin and muscles and the moving of the limbs in passive range of motion, could be classified as another form of exercise. It develops the animal's muscle tone and can increase the depth and rate of respiration. All dogs and horses benefit from basic massage.

The increased circulation that the animal's bodies receive during any basic full body massage session is equivalent to about a half-hour leisurely walk in the park. During a massage session, the animals also experience important psycho-social interactions. Massage enhances their trust quotient, strengthening their connection, their bond with their humans and as such, can be a vital part of behavior modification, education and training. The repetitive movements of a massage resonate with the animal's need for the comfort they feel in routines.
